FocuSStem NextGen Intensive

The Karmanos Cancer Institute has collaborated with FocuSStem NextGen Founder and Director Katie Heath to create a two-week program where STEM-interested high school students are invited to experience hands-on learning about careers in science, technology and health care at the Karmanos Cancer Institute and Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit.

The FocuSStem NextGen Summer Intensive provides a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications.

Interested students from Wayne, Oakland and Macomb county high schools will learn from selected experts such as laboratory research scientists, physicians, nurses, physicists, phlebotomists, and others.
